Are Electrified Classics The Way Of The Future?
Lunaz is a new restomod start-up that painstakingly restores old British cars, even offering one-off paint schemes and interior packages that are designed by automotive styling specialists, then electrifies them. Lunaz is led by ex-Renault F1 technical director Jon Hilton who claims that the company will make "the most beautiful and celebrated cars in history ready for the future". The company is currently developing electric versions of the 1961 Rolls-Royce Phantom V, 1956 Rolls-Royce Cloud and the 1953 Jaguar XK120.
The cars will come equipped with modern additions such as traction control and cruise control allowing the cars to be safer and more user friendly. The large Phantom V will be powered by a 120kWh battery pack while the Jaguar gets a 80kWh pack, both will come with fast-charging and regenerative braking. The Jag is powered by twin motors producing 375hp and 700nm of torque blowing the original 142kw and 285nm out of the water.
Lunaz is not the first company to be doing this as there are also companies in USA such as EV West, which has been converting cars for years. The range of their cars that they have converted is huge with it going from modern day pickup trucks to old Porsches. People are even doing it privately such as this Tesla powered Porsche below.
Restoring and then modifying cars to be electric is a growing industry as is allows you to appreciate the classic car while enjoying modern performance and having a team headed up by a former F1 technical director shows promise that Lunaz will be making some quality cars.
